Escape: Summer Getaway to New York City

July 26th, 2018

We’re heading to New York City in less than a week for a little vacation and couldn’t be more pumped about it.  There’s something special about New York that keeps bringing us back year after year, despite the many places in the world we would like to check off.   There is always something happening in the city; from shows, to sporting events, concerts and the overall hustle and bustle of the 8.5 million that call it home.  It’s very unlikely one would get bored when visiting The Big Apple.

For our 5 night escape, we’re likely to stick around Manhattan with the hopes of visiting the Bronx to catch a Yankees game.  We were eying a couple of shows to check out but the one we really wanted to see is ridiculously expensive so we may have to pass on that.  Other than general wandering, we’d also like to check out the craft beer scene, perhaps sign up for a running tour or two, and just hang out.  Either way, we’re sure this little time away will be a great one!

The Flights

We will be flying out of Pearson (YYZ) on an early morning flight via Air Canada.   Generally speaking, if you’re looking to redeem points/miles for flights to New York from Toronto, you’ll likely find yourself dishing out a minimum of 15,000 points for a roundtrip flight.  For this trip, we capitalized on a perfectly timed CIBC Aventura promotion which was offering trips to New York from only 8,000 points roundtrip!

The 8,000 point offer was only valid for travel from Billy Bishop airport via Porter Airlines to Newark (EWR) but for travel to LaGuardia (LGA) from Pearson Airport it was 10,000 points roundtrip per person.  I chose the latter for the flight to LGA.  Why? The Centurion Lounge of course.  I’ve touched upon the Centurion Lounges before and recently visited one in San Fransisco on our way to Hawaii.  If you want to read up on it check out this link.

Either way, spending 10,000 points for a roundtrip to New York is still an amazing deal.  On top of the 10,000 points, you’re also looking at approximately $130 in taxes per person but since I also had a $120 travel credit from from my Business Aventura card, I was able to stack that with this redemption.  Out of pocket for the 2 of us to visit New York – about $140.

The Hotels

We’ll be splitting our time in New York City between two different properties – The Millennium Hilton New York One UN Plaza as well as the Hampton Inn Manhattan-Soho.  The former was recently acquired by Hilton and was previously known as the One UN.  This landmark hotel is situated alongside the United Nations Headquarters in midtown Manhattan and from the reviews I’ve read, offers pretty spectacular panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline and East River.   The Hampton Inn Soho is located in the, you guessed it, Soho neighbourhood of Manhattan.  Soho is located in lower Manhattan and is primarily known for its high-end shopping and restaurants.

Wrap Up

We are definitely looking forward to our little escape to New York City as well as checking out the Centurion Lounge within LaGuardia Airport.

Anyone who’s been to New York City can testify that flight prices aren’t always the most favourable and often times you’re looking at spending a few hundred dollars for an hour and a half flight.  With that said, it’s always important to diversify your Miles and Points that way you can maximize value at a moments notice.  In this case, having/using Aventura points alongside a flight promotion proved to be the winner and offered savings of 10,000 points and $120 compared to that of Aeroplan for a similar flight.
