So Long, Farewell.
Auf wiedersehen, goodbye.
I leave and heave
A sigh and say goodbye
Goodbye Chase Marriott Visa.
The end as finally come. As we all know (if not, where have you been??), Chase and Marriott ended their relationship in Canada as of December 31, 2017. With that being said, no new applications were being accepted and ultimately there would be a closure to the Marriott Rewards Premier Visa, only time would tell when that day would come.
We’ll that day has been announced and officially from Chase, all Marriott Visa Cards will be closed as of March 15, 2018. “What does this mean, Steve??” Well it means exactly that. Come March 15th, 2018 you will no longer be able to use your card for any transactions. You will not be able to “easily” earn Marriott points in Canada anymore . (I say easily since there are still ways of earning Marriott Rewards Points.)
With that being said, there is a silver, albeit reassuring, lining to all of this.
You WILL continue to earn Marriott Reward points on eligible purchases made before March 15th, 2018
You WILL be awarded your anniversary Free Night Certificate upon the closure of your account.
Also, you will NOT be charged an annual fee on the renewal of your Marriott Rewards Visa Card beginning January 1, 2018. Any Annual Fee charged between April 1, 2017 and December 31, 2017 will be prorated to the March 15th closure date.
Last but not least, American Express has put together a special promotion for the Marriott Visa cardholders to the tune of 25,000 Starpoints Welcome Bonus (after $1,500 Min Spend. within (3) Months) when you apply for the Amex SPG Card. Offer is for new Amex SPG card holders. Apply using the link below.
Of course, please don’t ignore any remaining balances you had on your Marriott card at the time of closure. You will still receive statements and will be expected to pay them off. You wouldn’t want to tarnish your Credit Score would you??
Chase is sending out letters in the mail and you should be receiving them within the next few days, if you haven’t already received them. Here is a little peak at what you can expect:
Thank you for contacting Marriott Rewards.
Chase has decided to discontinue the Marriott Rewards Visa credit card in Canada. After March 14, 2018, existing cardholders in Canada will no longer be able to use their cards.
You will still receive your annual free night certificate and the 15 elite night credits, which will be deposited to their accounts after March 14, 2018.
The good news is that American Express will have an exclusive, limited time offer for guests affected by this change. You will be contacted by American Express soon with details of the offer.
I know what you’re thinking, “Why, Steve, why!?” I know I know. But please, don’t shoot the messenger! We all saw this coming! This was a fantastic card and an awesome way to earn Marriott Rewards Points, not to mention the FX cost savings with the No FX fee. Let’s just take this with a grain of salt and hope for the best in 2018 that another Marriott Rewards Credit Card will reappear. Perhaps as an AMEX Card?? We can only wait and see!
I eluded to above that there are still ways to earn Marriott Rewrds points, and not just by staying at Marriott properties. Keep in mind that AMEX still has their SPG Credit card – two of them to be exact – and that you can seamlessly earn and convert Starpoints to Marriott Reward Points at a ratio of 1:3. But please tell me you remembered that right? Have we learned nothing at all??
Until next time…Keep Wandering.
