American Express Business Gold Card -
American Express Business Gold Card

**Update – June 26th, 2018** Amex has removed the Annual Fee waiver which means you now have to pay the annual fee of $250

**Update – August 7th, 2018** Amex has decreased the referral bonus from 10,000 to 5,000.

The Business Gold Card is the second Business Card offered in the Amex MR Family.  This card has similar spending requirements to that of the Business Platinum card but yields a smaller Welcome Bonus – ouch.  The silver lining – this card offers an annual fee waiver for the first year!  With that being said, this card offers one of the highest Welcome Bonus’ out there and it won’t cost you a dime.

Sneak Peak:

Welcome Bonus: up to 40,000 Membership Reward Points after spending $5,000 within the first 3 months.

Annual Fee: $250 (Annual fee waiver as of June 26th, 2018)

Referral Power: 10,000 5,000 MR Points per successfully approved referral to any MR earning card (up to a Max. 150,000 MR Points/Calendar Year)

Earning Power: 2 MR per dollar on 3 merchants of your choosing from Amex List.  1 MR per dollar on everything else.

Bells & Whistles:

The Amex Business Gold Card offers a Welcome Bonus of 40,000 Membership Reward Points when you apply through a referral.  You’ll earn 40,000 MR Points after you spend $5,000 in the first 3 months.  If you don’t apply through a referral link, then the Amex Welcome Bonus offer is only 30,000 MR Points.

Although the spending requirement is $5,000, you can rest a little easier knowing that you can keep the $250 Annual Fee in your pocket. Because of that, it makes acquiring this card extra a lot more special.

Earning Power on the Business Gold Rewards Card is 2 MR points per dollar spent at three merchants of your choosing.  These can be selected from Amex’s List of 40+ participating merchant.  A few examples of these suppliers include, Plastiq, Petro Canada, Lowes, etc.  For all other purchases made with your card, you will earn 1 MR Point per dollar.

Travel Coverages:

To be quite honest, the travel insurance is not much to write home about.  I wouldn’t recommend using this card for travel purchases or even everyday spend unless you are earning 2 MR on your selected vendors. In any event, see below for specific coverages.

For Travel Expenses charged to your card you will obtain the following:

Travel Accident Insurance: up to $100,000

Lost or Stolen Baggage Insurance: up to $500 per trip

You’ll also have coverage for flight delay, baggage delay, hotel burglary and car rental theft and damage.

Lastly, it also includes Disability Plan for Small Business which covers you in the event of permanent, total disability as the result accidental injury – up to $10,000 as a sole proprietor.

Wrap Up:

The American Express Business Gold Card is an equally, low-barrier card, to that of the Gold Rewards Card.   With its Annual Fee Waiver you are essentially getting 40,000 MR points for free.  Keep in mind that the Minimum Spend is $5,000, so although this Welcome Bonus is low-hanging fruit, you’ll need to make sure you can hit the Minimum Spend in three months.  Being able to use Plastiq as one of your three suppliers can come in handy, especially if you have big ticket items to pay for including car/home insurance, personal/busines taxes owing, mortgages, etc.

Applying for the Business Gold Card through a referral will get you 40,000 MR Points.  If you apply through the Amex site, you will only receive 30,000 MR points.  Applying through a referral makes the most sense for an extra 10,000 MR!

As always, many thanks ladies and gents for the patronage and for being awesome.  If you’re enjoying things and want to see more, I’d really appreciate it if you considered applying through my link above.  Make sure you click “View our other Cards” which will take you to the Amex Biz Gold Card.
